Watchers in white

Category: Spontaneous Moments

Photo and caption by Quentin Curzon

The ritual that takes place at Wagah border between India and Pakistan is a gigantic show that attracts hundreds of proud Indians and Pakistanis every day. The reconciliation celebration (resembling more like a football match) is an impressive experience where the young, old, rich and poor gather here each afternoon. In this peaceful violence, for me the attraction was not only the performance, but moreso the onlooker. As the ritual proceeds undefined and unframed within the photograph, what interested me was the spectator, the patriot, the people.

Location: India, Punjab, Wagah border.
