Coins and Bashfulness

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Alex Newby

A bashful smile from a Buryat beauty. One hundred fifty years ago, silver rubles strung up with coral beads would have graced the head of a Western Buryat maiden. Today nickel plated steel and wood will have to do, but the impression is still striking. The Buryats are made up of two sub-groups, the Eastern Buryats and the Western Buryats. Four main tribes make up the Buryats: Ekhirit, Bulagat, Hori and Khongodor. This young lady is dressed Ekhirit style. Captured in the Irkutsk Region of Siberia, at the Yordinsky games, traditional games of the Western Buryat people.

Location: Yelantsi, Irkutsk Oblast, Russian Federation
