Generations of Nomads

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Michelle Lanzoni

Asha is a sixty-year-old matriarch who lives in a dry, rural region of Sudan that still supports semi-nomadic movements. When the rains come, Asha and her family will travel with livestock across the Butana. Asha's memory of water is strong and clear, and she describes the way different kinds of water taste. By moving from one "haffir" to the next, Asha is able to utilize the precious water resources as she walks with her family across the desert landscape.

Location: Butana Region, Sudan
