Playing Cards Beneath Prayer Flags in Hohhot

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Evelyn Boettcher

On a cold and crisp winter day in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (China), this was the scene at the Bao'erhan Stupa across from the Guanyin Si temple. Crowds of men and women huddled against the walls of the stupa, where they were protected against the cold wind, and played cards on small tables set up on bicycles. It was a very windy day, and the prayer flags fluttered constantly in the wind. I was walking along the stupa above the crowd when took this picture: you can just see hints of the crowd and card games through the many prayer flags.
