The Tree of Life
Category: Spontaneous Moments

I came across these four boys playing in a tree when I was walking through the remote village of Ilahita, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea back in April. For me the photo represents the very essence of this youngest generation of Papua New Guineans; their innocence and resourcefulness; the simplicity and barrenness of their surroundings and of the opportunities available to them; the dark clouds of corruption and politics overhead; their dreams of climbing towards a better future; their aspirations curtailed and beaten down by the lack of height of the tree before them.
