Woolen Socks

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Guy Needham

One of my favourite Balkan moments happened just as I was leaving Albania. An old woman at the bus stop dangled some heavy woollen socks in my face in the hope that this foreigner would buy them - despite me sweltering in 35 degree heat. Luckily, I was looking to spend the last of my LEK so followed her back to her knitting. After much hand gesticulation I gave her cash, she gave me some socks, and then topped it off with this Albanian ‘smile’.

Location: Shodkra, Albania
