The Cossack

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Jonathan McMorran

At Kiev Metro’s Independence Station, the mournful, poetic song of this Cossack hung heavily in the humid air of the underground. Dressed in traditional clothes and Ukrainian colours, he sang folk songs about poverty and starvation under Soviet rule, as well as stirring ballads lamenting the Russification and loss of identity in modern Ukraine. It was a remarkable atmosphere as many of the onlookers in this bustling station stopped to listen, falling silent as they heard his sorrowful songs.

Location: Kiev, Ukraine
