A Blanket of Dust

The Kuchi girls are taking shelter inside their tent during the dust storms. Nomadism still plays a significant role in Afghan lifestyle. More than 100,000 of Kuchi, one of the ethnic nomad groups, have been displaced due to natural disasters such as flood and drought in the past few years. Very little of the foreign assistance by the international community has arrived to aid the Kuchis. Most donors emphasize short-term economic and humanitarian aid rather than the longer-term the Kuchis need to rebuild their herds. As a result, most of the Kuchi today remain jobless and illiterate.
