The Juggernaut

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by R Kapoor

The Puri Rath Yatra - the pulling of the Chariot of Lord Jagannath by hundreds of thousands of devotees is an annual event. The word Juggernaut itself is derived from this event. The photo captures the devotees placing the lord on the chariot. The effort visibly indicates the weight of the statue. One can only imagine the total weight of the chariot with the statue and some 100 devotees seated on it, which is then pulled through the procession route by thousands of devotees.

Location: Puri, India
