Mount Ruapehu

Category: Outdoor Scenes

Photo and caption by Mark Watson

Mount Ruapehu, an active volcano, is the highest mountain in New Zealand's North Island. I shot this image in the cold of a winter dawn from its neighbouring peak, Mt Ngauruhoe after spending a night waiting out a storm in my tent on the summit. These peaks are two of a trio of volcanoes that dominate the central high country of the island.

Location: Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
