Schoolgirls in the Snow

Category: Sense of Place

Iran in the popular imagination is synonymous with oppression and conservatism, but my trip to there evinced other hidden dimensions. Away from Tehran, mountainous locations like this ski resort on Mt. Tochal are where structures seem to break down, providing an escape from the surveillance and self-surveillance that thrives in the city. Up there, it feels like quite a different world altogether. This shot reminded me of one of Brueghel’s paintings, emphasizing the scene’s otherworldly qualities.

Location: Mt. Tochal, Tehran Province, Iran
