Polar Mirage

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Jens Rosbach

We were on an Russian icebreaker in the Franz-Josef-Land, the northernmost islands of the world. One day we took photos of whales - with very long lenses. But the mammals disappeared soon. I was bored; so I focussed the arctic horizon with the 500-mm-lens. Suddenly I discovered the very rare polar mirage: the sea in the clouds.

Location: Arctic, Barents Sea, Russia, Franz-Josef-Land
