A volcanologist takes a break from nighttime observing of Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, from the 12,375 ft summit of Santa Maria. Towns and the Pacific Ocean lie in the distance. The unique perspective is one reason that an international scientific expedition set up still, high-speed video, and infrared cameras here to capture the regular (several per day) eruptions of this spectacular volcano.
