Sky Lanterns In Flight

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Kerry Watkins

Revelers flock to Pingxi, a small township nestled in the mountains of northeastern Taiwan, to watch the release of thousands of sky lanterns. Long ago, there was much crime and lanterns were released to let others know they were safe from bandits. This eventually evolved into the large-scale festival celebrated today. Participants write wishes on the lanterns and release them to the heavens to bring good luck for the coming year.

Location: Pingxi, Taipei County, Taiwan
