Pitcher Race

Category: Travel Portraits

Photo and caption by Amartya Mukherjee

Santiniketan was formed by Asia's first Nobel Laureate and India's national poet Rabindranath Tagore. On the day of the annual fair at Santiniketan, called poush mela, there is a large sports meet. The local tribals, known as santhals, also participate. The high point for the ladies is balancing the earthen pitcher on their heads and run to the finish line before the others. The fast one typically drop their pitchers and get disqualified - truly, slow and steady does win the race here !

Location: Santiniketan, West Bengal, India
