The Salton Sea sits about 200 ft below sea level in California's Colorado Desert. At one time the surrounding towns and beaches enjoyed a decent tourist population, but as water levels subsided and salinity and agricultural runoff rose, taking much of the wildlife with it, holiday hotspots became desolate ghost towns. Mattresses lie rotting in rooms that once housed honeymooners, armchairs peer out over the sea still awaiting the return of their owners. A small resident population remains, consisting mainly of cast offs from the rest of the world living in motor homes or dilapidated shacks.
