Batty Austin

Category: Outdoor Scenes

Photo and caption by Brian Barnes

Bat watching tour boats transport customers on Lady Bird Lake while millions of Mexican free-tailed bats take flight from the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue bridge in Austin, TX. Bat populations in the United States are crashing while conservation groups work hard to preserve the bat populations through education and science. Austin's "Bridge Bats" are a success of such efforts. The city once considered the bats as pests, but now embraces their batty friends for their environmental and economical benefits.

Location: Austin, Texas
