The Bridge of Co-existence
Category: Sense of Place

This old bridge 'Stari Most' rebuilt by UNESCO is a painful reminder of the the violent ethnic war that ravaged former Yugoslavia. Walking along the cobbled streets of the old town of Mostar, I reached this magnificent bridge. Still visible bullet holes and scars of mortar shelling on the buildings surrounding this bridge evoked in me the sense of dreadfulness of being in a war zone. I returned from Bosnia with this image etched forever in my memory. Rebuilding of this bridge is one of the best practical examples of peaceful co-existence that I have witnessed in my travels so far.
