Polo - The lone gorilla

Category: Sense of Place

Photo and caption by Saravanan Paramasivan

This Western Lowland Gorilla has been alone since 1995 the time it entered the Mysore Zoo in India. Due to the complications in animal exchange in zoo this poor western lowland silver back has stayed alone for almost 20 years now. Hopefully this picture entered into the contest will help him get some company. This Gorilla when he started in this zoo was irritated with the guests visiting him at the zoo find them as the only companion for him and actually has breakfast looking at the guests who spend long (if not hours) minutes staring at him. This shot taken of him was at one such time.

Location: Mysore Zoo
