Life & Death in the Arctic
Category: Sense of Place
Photo and caption by Anirudha Robi Chakraborty
We visited Kaktovik, an Eskimo island village in Alaska on the Arctic ocean. The Inuit make a living under harsh conditions. The Inuit go whale hunting in the fall and share the whale meat among all the residents of the Kaktovik village. They leave the whale bones with 10 percent of the meat for the polar bears to feed on on the back side of the village. I came across the site and was initially appalled to see this dead dog tied to these whale bones. Being a dog lover, I debated whether or not to even take this photo but decided that this photo shows the harshness of the Artic conditions.
