This is a portrait of a Padong (Padaung) tribe girl, taken in the Northern Thailand. They are originally from Myanmar and were taken to Thailand in the 80's. They have a tradition of wearing this brass neck ring starting around the age 2 to 5. It is said that only girls born on Wednesdays wear these brass ring based on the traditional story of a headman of the village saw a dream in which he was told a Wednesday-born baby was going to be killed by a tiger.
