The Gate
Category: Spontaneous Moments
Photo and caption by Anna Geiserman
During my brief stay in southern France, I saw this woman enter and exit the Saint-Sernin church at least three times a week. I don't know if she works there or is simply an avid churchgoer, but her routine always included the most careful locking and unlocking of her bicycle to the church's side gate. Though I saw her so often, she never lost her sense of mystery in my mind. I think this moment really captures that--the action is so familiar yet, with her back to us and with the shadows secretly integrating her into the gate she knows so well, she maintains that mysterious air.
