Guarding "The Mine and The Sea"
Category: Sense of Place

Sitting in a small cafe in the fishing port in Cudillero, Asturias, on the northern coast of Spain, this scene brought it all together for me. The shrine has a plaque in front which reads "La Mina y La Mar", which I assume is to pay tribute to the major industries in this area - mining and fishing. The shrine, fishing nets, rugged rocks jutting from beneath the wall, colorful windows, cafe chairs, and of course, the police presence, provide a concise "snapshot" of this colorful village.
