The Holy Sepulchre

Category: Sense of Place

Even though I am not religious myself, I was not immune to the faith of the hundreds of other people who had gathered here. The sound of voices was a constant background ocean, but there was nothing strident; just a continuing, gentle, grumbling susurration. The play of natural light through the cool shadows above against the warmth of the candle-light below fascinated me, and though this was the only image I captured without a press of bodies between myself and the entrance, I spent the rest of my day here and in adjoining rooms, emerging only when it was full dark outside.

Location: Jerusalem, Israel
