At dusk in the Cordillera Apolobamba, Bolivia
Category: Sense of Place
Photo and caption by Danielle Leonard
At dusk, at our camp in the shadow of Akamani, the sacred peak of the Kallawaya people, our climbing expedition's young horsewoman slowly approaches a wary pack horse, hobbles in hand. The hike that day had been long, our vision and direction frustrated by clouds rising straight up out of the Amazon. Horse and human, we were tired. I shot this photo from my tent, as I watched her slowly tend to the horses. For me, this quiet moment in the mist, at the end of a long day, captured the magic of these sacred mountains, and of the people who live there.
