Mount Merapi
Category: Sense of Place
Photo and caption by Sarah Firdaus
I remember traveling to Mount Merapi two years ago, before the 2010 eruption. It was a beautiful sight. Now, tourists travel with caution. The narrow roads leading to the site are unstable. Overlooking the valley one can see banana trees covered with ashes until the tip of leaves. This photo shows one of the ruined homes with graffiti art symbolizing those who were asleep during the eruption.
Location: Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta, Indonesia
