Mothers without Babies, Uganda
Category: Sense of Place
Photo and caption by Diane Sawchuck
"Mothers without Babies" was taken on a maternity ward in Masaka, Uganda in May 2011 during a site visit. This ward is for mothers who have had either spontaneous vaginal deliveries (SVD) or cesarean section (C/S) and whose babies have died. The vast majority of global stillbirths and neonatal deaths occur in lower & middle income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. I thought this picture depicts the sorrow, tragedy, and global inequity faced by African women, their infants, and their families.
