Category: Sense of Place

An indigenous Bolivian walks down a local street in Coroico, Bolivia located in the North Yungas province. Year round temperate weather, lush rainforests and the infamous Death Road draw tourists to the village, it also permits the right conditions to grow coca leaves. Coca plantations dot the hillsides throughout the province, as the leaves are in demand by locals in La Paz, the capitol of Bolivia located approximately 100 km away. Indigenous Bolivians commonly chew the leaves, as it is a stimulant. The leaves are also a major contributor in the production of cocaine.
Location: Coroico, Bolivia
