This is one of two pink granite sphinxes perched on either side of Pompey's Pillar just outside Alexandria at the edge of the Egyptian Desert. For nearly two thousand years, these monuments overlooked the ancient city and the Nile Delta. This view is no more, another casualty of urban sprawl.
