- A porter stood on a sunny morning during a trek to Roopkund(on the great Himalayan range) at 12,500ft. This was the only day we saw the Sun for around 4 hrs as opposed to the extremely rainy conditions that were faced on all 9 days of our trek to Roopkund(14,000ft). We couldn't make it to Roopkund because of the dangerous weather conditions.

- In This photo, we crept under the kiln to check the contents, when suddenly a potter came out of the darkness. Being in position, i took the shot along with the subject to show how low and difficult being in this place is.

- This is what Etosha pan looks like in flood. If it was permanently fill it would be the worlds 3rd largest lake after the Caspian sea and Lake Superior. The last time Etosha pan flooded like this was in 1978. Pink flamingo feathers litter the shoreline as you walk out. Fine mud oozes in between your toes which has a strong smell of algae. The Pan is 120km at its longest and 72km at is widest.

- Antibes is a famous village of the French Riviera. The quiet and picturesque life of Antibes is interrupted every year in May for hosting celebrities of the Cannes Festival Film. The normal life of its inhabitants look like sometimes a García Marquez story. Nikon D300, program manual, exposure 0.01, aperture f/5.6, length 55mm, ISO 200. My works do not contain any retouching, any revised editions or arrangements (no photoshop, no HDR). I do not edit the photos on the camera. I work only with the camera before of the shot. I do not use polarized filters on the lenses. www.juanrubiano.com

- The Tannery

- Being so secluded from the city due to the noxious smell produced from the tanning process made for a challenge when finding a perspective to shoot the tannery. The finest view came from the shop window at which a local trader sells his leather ware - the smell was unbelievable, a mixture of pigeon droppings and urine used to soften the skin prior to the tanning.

- Longshan Temple in Taipei, Taiwan is a temple like none other I have ever visited. As it is a multi-religious temple, there are many gods displayed, prayed to, and worshiped. This also brings in various groups of people; students praying and offering gifts to the god of education, women offering gifts and prayers to the god of fertility, etc, etc. And, of course, as in all temples, you find monks or nuns (in this case, both), and of course the tourists in between. The scene displayed is a somewhat typical scene, capturing the devoted, and those who just come to soak it all in.

- I was lucky enough to spend a day in a master wood carvers home and workshop while in Bali, Indonesia. One of the carvers in the workshop was working on a life-sized seated Buddha praying. I was so taken with the combination of his weathered human fingers and such peaceful wooden fingers of the praying Buddha. This photo captures for me, the deep inner peace inside the people we met in Bali.

- Deer Cave - Home to over 3 million Wrinkle Lipped Bats that roost high up in the roof (areas of black patches). Whilst traveling through Borneo, I stopped off at Gunung Mulu National Park and visited Deer Cave. Every evening all the bats fly out in huge swarms and clouds to feed. When we took this photograph there had just been a rain storm on the surface and the waterfalls in the distance were in full flow, bursting out from the roof of the giant cave. At over 120m and 145m wide, Deer Cave is one of the largest cave passages on Earth and is truly a remarkable sight.

- A child's bicycle slowly emerges from the frozen sea ice on the shores of Arctic Bay, Nunavut - in the Canadian High Arctic - as the spring melt hits. Canada's Arctic is a place of stunning beauty...and of ongoing social problems, as the relatively new territory of Nunavut, which contains a traditional (predominately Inuit) population tries to determine its place within Canada.

- While waiting for my connecting flight in the early hours of the morning, the airport was quiet and empty. I was shooting the man reading his magazine when the perfectly poised female traveler walked by and created a perfect silhouette against the glowing sign. Her posture and high heels embody the French style. Charles DeGaul Airport is such an iconic place for travelers visiting and stopping through Paris.
