  Captured during the Tamil New Year in Malaysia, the boy was part of the procession into a local temple. His expression of joy was pure, and the genuine sense of enjoyment reminds me of why I love being in my country.

  There were hundreds of people touring the Nasrid Palaces that morning, and the woman spent most of the time next to her husband and child, but this instant she appeared alone, walking past a placid circle of water in the center of a palace almost a thousand years old. I had been trying to photograph the pool bisected by shadow when she walked by in traditional dress - a robe and hijab or shayla (maybe, I'm not certain) - in the middle of the Alhambra, subtly counterpointed by the tiny, modern camera in her hands.

  The northern part of Malawi is known for the beauty of Nyika National Park. Less well documented but equally as stunning are the small villages just below in Henga Valley. While having lunch at the house of a villager in May, 2010, I visited his pig stables. Six of his sows had recently given birth, but he had not been at home when they did and feral dogs killed several of the newborn piglets. Despite -- or perhaps because of -- these recent events, the pigs were full of curiosity.
