  I spent some time with second generation local bee keeper Mike Burt during a recent trip to New Zealand. On this particular morning a heavy fog moved in off the wilderness just after our arriving to harvest the seasons honey. The sun was rising quickly as I fumbled the controls on my camera through thick and sticky rubber gloves. It all came together as Mike gave the bees a few puffs of smoke with the sun creating an amazing display through the trees at his back.

  A female performer applies makeup in preparation for a Chinese opera performance in Taipei, Taiwan. The Taiwan school of Han traditional drama dates back to the 19th century, originating in the Yilan region of Taiwan. It is an offshoot of the older traditional Chinese opera and was brought to Taiwan by immigrants from Fujian province. The operas traditionally tell folk stories of the region. Modern life and its multitude of entertainment options has seen the popularity of traditional drama decline throughout Taiwan and China.

  It was a hot, sunny February day in Bagan and she was sitting in the shadow of a roof surrounded by about five very old women, all wearing the traditional Thanaka. It was an incredibly peaceful moment, so I asked politely if I could take her picture and thankfully the women granted me the honor. The girl didn't change her expression for the whole time, simply looking at me calmly. Every time I look at this picture I wonder what she was thinking in that moment.
