- While exploring The Loop in St. Louis, this man's somber presence called out to me from even the innermost corner of a tiny tobacco shop. I asked politely if I could take his photo, and without even looking at me, he just grunted and continued to read his newspaper. The ashtray on the counter had about a thousand cigarette butts in it. "Hey, listen, how many pictures you gonna take, girlie?" "How many cigarettes are you gonna smoke, mister?" I jokingly retorted. "I'll stop smoking when people stop driving cars," he sadly smiled. He didn't admit it, but I'm pretty sure I made his day.

- A young student at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. She wakes up around 5am to get to her morning classes, after which she travels to her job making sandals on the outskirts of the city (which can take up to an hour & a half each direction). She then returns to university to complete her studies & assignments, often until midnight. As she is a student of computer science but with no computer of her own, she is heavily reliant on the university's resources, often at the cost of sleep. But through a tired smile, she says it is worth it. She is the first in her family to go to University.

- I met this field worker in Maramures/Romania. This region is known for traditional handcraft and hard working until old age. I was some kind of perplexed when I watched him passing. He wore a T-Shirt made by an Insurance company from Germany and it‘s print was like ‚150 years young‘. As I talked to him I found out that he didn‘t know about the meaning of his shirt. But to my mind it perfectly characterizes the type of people living in the Maramures.

- Day of the Dead Catrinas on Parade

- The colonial city of Merida has been celebrating Day of the Dead behind closed doors for years. In the past few years, the city has encouraged citizens to put their altars for their dead loved ones out onto the street, calling it Corridor de Las Almas (Corridor of the Souls). On the evening of October 31, 2010, I walked down this street, which happens to be just a few blocks from my home in Merida, and got this photo of six women dressed up like the traditional Catrinas of Central Mexico. The light was perfect, they stood perfectly still and expressionless and I took the photo.

- I was fortunate enough to see how a simple connection between a child and the doves could move my heart so deeply. That was indeed an example of a sincere love between two friends, no matter how different they are...:)

- This is a photograph of a "character" working at The High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon. He was dressed as a Cowboy and was handcrafting a leather rope when I approched him. WIth his head tilted and his focus on the leather strands, he truly appeared to be a man from the past. Picture Taken on 9/5/2009

- Woman and Child in Ifotaka, Madagascar
- field_caption
- Relaxing in the shade during the hottest part of the day, I was lucky to glimpse this woman and child framed by the window of a house. The kids in Ifotaka love having their pictures taken, but it took the encouragement of some of the other villagers to convince this woman not to be afraid of my camera. The woman's face is covered with a traditional skin rejuvenating mask.
