Buhlow Lake

On a trip back home from college I pulled my car over beside an old rail line near Buhlow Lake and wandered around taking shots at dusk. A lone fisherman was finding his usual spot on the lake and I took advantage of the great compositional element he added.

I was biking down Royal Street the day after the Saints won the Superbowl. A burst in tourism brought out most of the street performers. This one stopped me in my tracks.

Oyster Bar, French Quarter
Photograph by Elizabeth Treadway, My Shot
In September I went back to New Orleans for a visit for the first time since Katrina. This shot caught my eye while sitting in a little oyster bar on the corner of Royal and St. Louis streets in the French Quarter. I was happy to see on this trip that the essential spirit and personality of this interesting city has not been dampened.

Oak Tree, Convent

This is an enormous live oak near one of our favorite restaurants in Convent, Louisiana. It is out in sugarcane country on the Mississippi River. There are plans to build a pig iron plant on, or near, this property. I hope they spare this tree.

Oak Alley Plantation
Photograph by Srividya Narasimha, Your Shot
My husband and I had driven to Louisiana from Texas to attend the Mardi Gras. I had seen photos of "a house in Louisiana, with plenty of trees framing it" and didn't know what it was called. After asking many, many people I learned it might be the Oak Alley Plantation. Once I arrived at this place, I knew I wanted to capture the excellent manner in which the mansion is framed. I waited for a while till the shadows of the tree became long so as to connect one another. I love this place!

Intracoastal City

Intracoastal City, Louisiana—a very small, hurricane-obliterated town along the Louisiana coast—is home to a handful of shrimpers and is one of the many bases for the offshore oil and gas industry. Thirty-two-degree temperatures brought a low-lying fog to the coast.

Crawfish Boil

Visiting New Orleans was an emotional experience, and meeting people who lost homes and families in the tragedy of Katrina was eye opening. But sitting at a crawfish boil and hearing their stories made me sure of one thing ... they have hope.
